The Air Nomads were almost completely wiped away in a genocide by the Fire Nation. However, before the Air Nomads were killed off they often traveled and because of that they were called nomads. They lived in one of the four temples and each temple had a Council of Elders which consisted of five monks or sisters. The North and South Air Temples housed male Air Nomads, while the West and East Air Temples housed female Air Nomads. The only Air Temple not to be located on a mountain top is the Western Air Temple which is located on the underside of a cliff.

Air is the element of freedom. Airbenders continually sought for spiritual enlightenment, the result being all Air Nomads having the ability to bend. There ability to bend the air is more powerful when there is wind. The key to Airbending though is flexibility, finding and following the path of least resistance. This bending is notable for being almost entirely defensive, however it is reputed to be the most dynamic of the bending arts. Airbenders can overwhelm many opponents at once with large and powerful attacks that could be fatal. However due to the pacifist nature of the Air Nomads such attacks were rarely used unless necessary.

Airbenders are tattooed with arrows following the movement of chi through ones body when they finish there training. Male Air Nomads generally have shaven heads, while the older ones also have facial hair. Females have there hair shaved back just enough so one can see there arrows.

Air Nomads generally support philosophy of conflict avoidance and respect for all life. This accounts for Airbending's stress on defensive maneuvers and its apparent lack of fatal attacks. The Air Nomads have the smallest population but the most increased spirituality while benders in general make up only a small percentage of the larger, more populous nations.

Airbenders emphasize intuition and imagination. To an Airbender, there is always another path to take, as air flows wherever it can. 

The first Airbenders were the Flying Bison which are also called the Sky Bison. They have arrow markings on there fur which is where the Air Nomads get there tattoos from. They are also considered sacred to the Air Nomads. The last known Sky Bison is Appa due to the fact his species was hunted after the Air Nomads were almost all killed. It is presumed once he is dead the Sky Bison will be extinct.

While most Airbenders seen bend just plain air there are other ways one can use the ability. For one Airbenders have increased agility and speed, and can also use Airbending to fly with gliders, and generate, amplify, and manipulate sound waves which is called Soundbending. Airbending is the only type of bending without an apparent sub-skill though Soundbending has been speculated to be a sub-skill by fans.

Some of the weaknesses for Air Nomads is the fact that they don't have many fatal moves. They often decide against using them due to there pacifist nature and for the fact Airbending is more about defense. On top of this an Airbender would be at a direct disadvantage when in an enclosed space due to the fact it would restrict there movement.

Some Airbenders in the series were Monk Gyatso, Avatar Aang, Avatar Yangchen, Sister lio, Monk Tashi, and Monk Pasang.

Airbending's season is Autumn.

The opposing style of bending for Airbenders is Earthbending.
